Arcologies/ Changyu Jung

There are many topics related to social development and the future. Agriculture is one of them. When people talk about the social development and the future, they often talk about the development of technology closely related to us. But the case of agriculture is not easily mentioned in the talk of such topics, even though it is closely related to the food we eat. This is why I chose this topic. When talking about the future and social development, I thought it was necessary to think about topics related to agriculture. This video talks about Arcologies, an environmental planning cities, in relation to future agriculture. Arcology refer to the form of self-sufficient residences in skyscrapers. It is an environmentally sustainable community that enables self-sufficiency. In arcology, if only enough power is produced, crops may be increased through LED lighting, which is more efficient for the photosynthesis of plants than sunlight. Arcology is a concept that can replace existing citie...

Will the future technology be more sustainable?

I do believe that future technology is sustainable technology. We can see big trends in countries and the private sector investing a significant amount of money into the technology sector. I think in the future it's going to be not only a choice for us to stand for more sustainable focused alternatives but it's possible that we're going to be forced to do it because of the consequences that we can meet otherwise. We come to a point in the world when in terms of technology it's harder and harder to come up with innovative ideas. A big part of the technology needs to be improved in order to get more of it. In many cases making it more sustainable will make them also more profitable because of eliminating the costs that are held by utilization if the current technology. With all the support and topic raised, sustainable technology will be also the favored technology, at least in more developed countries that can afford that. Moreover, obtaining moe sustainable technology w...

Can we think of some examples of how Internet contributed to globalization both in economy and in culture?

Firstly, I wanted to define globalization as the interdependence of the world's 'players' such as countries, economies, societies, cultures, etc.. Globalization is thought to start in the XVth century, and ever since it's a not stopping process. I think the main effect on globalization that the internet had is speeding up the process: it influences cultures, through sharing information and communication between people, it's letting the cultures to interact and influence each other what has been discussed in a separate post, it influences economies through the digitalization of international trade, making the way we trade much simplified, we are no longer limited by the time, location or the time zone, it influences the businesses making it much easier to enter the international market, it influences media, spreading the information and influencing that way politics, economies, etc..

Can we think of some examples of how Internet has changed our culture?

The Internet changed our culture in many aspects. I think the main aspect is the possibility to confront different cultures and affect each other. It can be also used to look a bit outside of our bubble. We're used to the environment and culture that surrounds us, also taking many aspects of it for granted. Thanks to the information that can be found on the internet we may take advantage of that and appreciate our culture more. Learning about diversity with the use of the internet is what I think has also an impact on us. We can communicate more with people from different parts of the country or the world and we can gain from their cultures a lot of value and knowledge. There's also a different view on this topic that says that through this culture exchange out own characteristic features are starting to disappear. Though I think cultures are something that was always changing and a process that we cannot stop. It is possible to care about heritage without giving up on many val...

Youtube video: Economies of the Future

I think there are many topics relevant to social development. However, because at my home university I'm focusing on many economic-related subjects, I decided to choose the video: Economies of the Future. The video asks the questions on how will the future look, how technology already influences our lives, and how it will be in the future. The video is bringing also future challenges that we will have to face. How the future will be in a world where every step will be recorded. How our data are becoming a currency or a subject of trade. Our life will change a lot and the video presents possible scenarios. However, there are also threats to our future lives such as energy (our supplies are neither safe nor stable), waste utilization problems, and overall automatization resulting in the shrinking job market. The video discusses different possibilities that may happen in the future like digitalization of the currency, the future of the cities (when a lot will be possible to do from ...

What does a sustainable future actually look like?

The article says bout the sustainable plan for the future. Even though there's an idea of a sustainable future, there have been talks about it, not much has been done. The author asks the question of how to cope with the current problems. Also since the definition of a sustainable future underlines that we cannot compromise the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, there's another question - what will be the needs of future generations. It's hard to predict because the world is expected to change in every aspect starting from the population number to grow. What will be the needs of future generations? Also, how to motivate people toward undertaking more sustainable lifestyles? The problem is that there's no direct/one answer for how sustainable lifestyle should look or what kind of actions should we take. The author criticizes that even though that topic has started to be discussed a long time ago, we still haven't moved forward with it. The direct...

W6 Reading: Positive Development/ joon hee Lee

PD(Positive Development) theory is based on the ecological philosophy that emerged in the 1980s. According to this, the existing institutional and physical structures reduce future’s choices. It argues that a truly sustainable framework of planning, decision and design is realized by transforming a negative system into a positive one. PD proposes ways to enable net positive design and development. Coming from the theory, "Net Positive" is a new paradigm for sustainable development and design. A net positive system/structure will be said to 'give more back to nature and society' over each life cycle. In contrast, such as loss of biodiversity, cumulative pollution, wealth imbalance and social inequality. In order to reverse the future direction, development must increase nature beyond the pre-human condition.  The original principle of sustainability (natural conservation and equity between current and future generations) focuses more on the future. Accordingly, l...

W7/ Video :Moon Base Concepts / Lee hayoung

1. Summary In 1969, NASA's fifth Apollo program manned spacecraft mission began. This was a measure and symbolic significance of the development of human technology. It wasn't very smooth. Although the mission had to go as planned in a very specific way, an error occurred and the computer overflowed, and Apollo 11 almost exploded when the astronauts were inside. But trained astronauts stopped this and mankind's first lunar landing mission succeeded. 2. What was interesting The development of human society may be explained by the development of technology. The U.S. was determined to successfully complete its exploration of the moon, as technology could soon be considered national power. Aldrin said, "The feat of sending three humans to the moon could be accomplished not only by government or business, but by the state or more. I think it symbolizes curiosity about the unknown of humans." This seemed to be an endless curiosity about human technology and perha...

What is meant by that? / Lee hayoung

Q. Society is not determined by technology, nor is technology determined by society. Both emerge as two sides of the sociotechnical coin. What is meant by that? A. So to begin with, I think that society and technology are the relationships that influence each other, the concepts that one cannot include or dominate. There is technology in society, and technology exists because there is society. I think it's an inseparable relationship, so I think it can be expressed in both sides of a coin.

W7/ Do you think that countries position are determined by the level of military technology they possessed?/ Lee hayoung

Q. Do you think that countries position are determined by the level of military technology they possessed? A. It is true that military technology is greatly needed for the safety of the nation. However, I think that modern society has a stronger advantage with the development of telecommunications, technology and free markets than physical and physical wars. Previously, each country's position was established through more direct wars, but now I think it depends on the development of trade or technology between countries rather than on war unless it is a specific country.

W7/ Will future technology be more sustainable? / Lee hayoung

Q. Will future technology be more sustainable? | A. As we are still working on sustainable development, I think it will be possible if these technologies are settled and stabilized. As human technology is increasing day by day, I think that not only sustainable development but also more diverse technologies that can sustain humanity can emerge.

W7/ What does a sustainable future actually look like? / Lee hayoung

1. Summary  So far, sustainable development claimed by people has not been concrete. But we must realize it in detail rather than insist on vaguely sustainable development. So I propose four things to develop the story of "global sustainability." Sustainability should be classified and specified by sector. It should also clearly identify and draw who will benefit. This way we can discuss and practice the future specifically. 2. What was interesting Sustainability may be a good way to address the global poverty gap, social exclusion and environmental degradation, but now this is so vague that it is rather being used as an excuse. It's not going on because everyone who calls for sustainability defines it differently, but I think it's a good attempt to correct it. 3. Discussion Point Discussions on sustainability will have to be carried out together by several countries. This is because the world villages will have to help each other and coexist together. ...

Do you think countries with nuclear weapons are less like to engage in conflicts?/김윤(KIM YOON)

I think countries with nuclear weapons are more like to engage in conflicts. Many countries are now in a mood for internal and external peace. Therefore, many treaties come and go between countries for peace. But having nuclear weapons, unlike most countries, can start a war at any time, which in turn causes the destruction of world peace. Therefore, many countries have no choice but to impose sanctions on countries with nuclear weapons. In the case of North Korea, South Korea and the U.S. are constantly demanding negotiations and conducting military exercises against the North's nuclear tests, and also the U.N. is taking various measures against North Korea for its possession of nuclear weapons. Despite the dissuasion of other countries, continuing to possess nuclear weapons is like owning a peace-destroying bomb, which makes them more embroiled in disputes with neighboring countries.

W7.1 Reading/김윤(KIM YOON)

Summary The blog provides a definition of sustainable development, and furthermore, four specific items for it. The first is to destroy reckless sustainability. The second is to be specific. The third is to make sure clearly who benefits. The fourth is to draw a picture. We should also discuss the sustainability of the future beyond the current sustainability. Interesting It was interesting to see the detail contents of the items needed in sustainable development, rather than simply insisting on it. Because I, too, have not long thought about who will benefit and what will be more efficient from sustainable development. I also agree that future sustainability should be discussed together without settling for the present. Discussion What can businesses and governments do in cooperation for sustainable development in the future?

W7. What does a sustainable future actually look like? / Juhee Cha

1. Summary "Sustainable development is development that meets current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.". This definition doesn't really tell us what sustainability looks like. There are four suggestions for understanding sustainability. It's subdivisions, materializations, objects of benefit, imaginations of a sustainable society. 2. Interesting Point I sympathized with this context. When I read an article about a sustainable society in the sixth week, I understood its concept but could not imagine what kind of society it was specifically. The reason is that I thought about how it applies to the large scope of society. It should ask specific and subdivided questions to society, such as how long it is sustainable, which areas it applies to, who is affected and who is harmed. If so, I think a sustainable society will be portrayed. 3. Discussion I want to know an example of a society in which sustainable development...

Will future technology be more sustainable?/ Changyu Jung

I think future technology will be more sustainable. More and more consumers are already beginning to recognize sustainability. When consumers choose products in many areas, sustainability takes a big part in their selection criteria. Also, I think future technology needs to be more sustainable than it is now, as everyone knows enough that the Earth is being devastated and resources are being exhausted. And I think this is an inevitable natural process. I understand that many companies are already embarking on sustainable technology development. I also know that there is a government that provides support to companies that develop sustainable technologies. I think developing more sustainable technology will be more sustainable because it will be a way for consumers to choose more, support from the government, and save future companies.

Sustainable Future/ Changyu Jung

Everyone talks about sustainability, but no one knows what it looks like. It should not harm the ability of future generations to meet their needs while meeting their current needs. But all of these words are abstract. To talk about sustainability, we need to do some things. First, sustainability should be subdivided into segments and classified by sector. Second, we need to talk specifically about sustainability. Third, we need to distinguish who benefits from sustainability. Fourth, you have to think about what it is and what it looks like, actually sustainability. Many organizations continue to study sustainable futures for this reason. It is certainly too difficult to imagine and portray a sustainable future. It is difficult to paint the future in the first place. In the past, people thought there would be flying cars everywhere in 2019. Imagining a sustainable future would be even more difficult in that it should portray a future that many people can agree on. To do this, many p...

W6 / Climate change education / Lee Hayoung

Various countries are struggling for change through climate change education. Climate Change Education (CCE) is an education aimed at addressing and developing effective responses to climate change. Help learners understand the causes and consequences of climate change, prepare them to adapt to the effects of climate change, and take appropriate steps to help them adopt a more sustainable lifestyle. They also learn how human activities affect climate change, what they can do to protect themselves from negative consequences, and how to reduce their own climate footprints. In particular, CCE improves the resilience of already vulnerable communities that are most likely to be affected negatively by climate change. It was interesting not just to encourage, but to minimize climate change and to provide systematic education for those who are vulnerable to already underway climate change. In particular, I learned that there is such a movement. Changing values is the most important thing, but ...

W6 Development-supported agriculture /SooBin Moon

Development-supported agriculture   Summary)        Development Assistance Agriculture was created to describe the Harvest project. This means an initial campaign for the development of real estate that preserves and invests in the use of farmland by coordinating the preservation and development of farmland. The main goal of development-assisted agriculture is to benefit farmers, residents, communities and the environment by ensuring that residential land development, small organic farm dogs properly co-exist The DSA is based on community-backed agriculture. And DSA has five principles in that it is a new technology. It is an open source development model that provides farmland conservation through limited development and continuity of previous agricultural uses, contracts between developers and farmers, less impact development technologies, sustainable architecture and careful ecological/environment planning, establishment of wildlife corr...

What are some of the major environmental problems facing out society? / Lee Hayoung

Image
High nitrogen dioxide emissions are a long-standing environmental problem. Nitrogen dioxide is toxic and highly oxidized, and is made up of one of the pollutants in the atmosphere. Inhalation is a gas in which more than a majority of animals die at concentrations above 100 ppm due to respiratory tract or lung infringement. It also changes the characteristics of clouds, blocks sunlight and absorbs solar radiation. All of these factors affect the Earth's climate and temperature. This can lead to regional warming, and vice versa, cooling the climate.  Due to the various economic activities of humans, these gases are generated and we are experiencing various climate change. However, it is not fortunate, but most human activities have been suspended due to the corona virus, leading to another natural change with about 30% of nitrogen dioxide drastically reduced.

W6 / Sustainable development / Lee Hayoung

Sustainable development is a way to develop society by meeting human needs without compromising the stability of the natural environment. As the 20th century entered, environmental problems arose. Thus, for the sake of human existence, human economic and social development valued environmental protection. Sustainability means replacing the system of the natural environment with better resources without degrading or making it dangerous so that human development can also be maintained indefinitely. Also, there should be time for nature to recover without being harmed by human activities. Therefore, humans should utilize nature to the extent that it can accommodate. Everyone knows that environmental issues are homework that the whole world has to solve together, but I don't think there has been any big movement so far. However, although it is a disaster for humans and there are many victims, the Earth's environment is rapidly positive. Do we have to be in such extreme situations ...

W6. Land recycling / Lee Se Hyun

Summary Recycling of land is the reuse of land that has been abandoned, empty or unused for redevelopment, land use change. Land recycling guarantees the reuse of land for the purpose of improving the environment. The purpose is to clean contaminated land, industrial development (residential, industrial, mixed use) and to create space protection zones (local parks, urban parks). In the case of ordinary land recycling, it is mainly implemented in poor communities, where it is difficult to use abandoned and underutilized land. In other words, land recycling has the nature of facilitating and stimulating reinvestment in historically marginalized areas.   There are three main forms of land recycling. The most common form of land redevelopment is the redevelopment of abandoned or unused buildings. By reusing existing buildings, they are highly efficient with minimal environmental damage. Redevelopment of Brown Field, Brown Field means contaminated area. Redevelopment of Brown...

W6. Sustainable development / Lee Se Hyun

Summary Sustainable development is the right development. It does not only think about humans, but also the environment, and seeks ways for humans and the environment to coexist. Its focus is on economy, social development and environmental protection with the aim of balancing human-ecosystems. Sustainable development is passed down to future generations through education. We strive to realize a sustainable and equitable society by changing the existing environmental paradigm. This applies to a variety of fields. Examples include environment (ecology), agriculture, environmental economics, manufacturing, technology, transportation, business, architecture, politics and culture. Efforts continue to be made to apply to various fields, not limited to specific areas. This is a correction of the wrong direction setting that was previously carried out. Interesting point x Sustainable development is a concept that has been discussed for a long time. In the meantime, our developm...

World Business Council for Sustainable Development

What is the reason behind choosing this topic? I decided to choose a topic regarding the  World Business Council for Sustainable Development (click to access Wikipedia page). The reason behind this is, as mentioned during the online classes, the biggest contribution to the worsening environment is caused by humans. That's why I believe we should change our actions to reverse the trend. I think personal actions and daily habits are really important factors influencing the environment but damages in the biggest scale were caused by the companies itself. That's why not only people as individuals should change behavior but also and foremost businesses. Companies are the organizations that are causing the biggest influence, though we should also remember that their practices were also influenced by what we as consumers expect. Consumers wouldn't care about the origins of the product or how it was produced. The priority would be to produce more and for a cheaper price. That...

W6 Reading: Sustainable development/ joon hee Lee

Sustainable development seeks to make the various resources (limited and increasingly depleted) used by our society available to future generations as much as necessary. It is part of economic, social development and environmental protection policies for the future, holding the current generation accountable for excessive environmental damage. It has moved to implement this in various sectors of modern society, including education, environment, energy, economy, policy and so on, making it one of the global concerns. Sustainable development certainly seems to have good intentions. But the criticism of this was quite interesting. They argue that as long as the Earth uses its existing finite resources, it will eventually run out. In other words, depletion is a process that we will inevitably undergo, and the meaning of the word 'sustainable' itself is vague and its practice itself is impossible. Reading this content, I thought it was important to make efficient use of resourc...

How would you define sustainable development? /SooBin Moon

How would you define sustainable development?        I think sustainable development is to continue economic development by utilizing more environmentally friendly technology instead of reckless technology that destroys modern nature. And if someone asks me personally which side is more focused on between environmental conservation and development in sustainable development, I would say development. This is because sustainable development seems to have a goal of choosing a relatively sustainable way to preserve the environment when developing, rather than developing technology to preserve the environment

What are ome of the major environmental problems facing our society? /SooBIn Moon

What are ome of the major environmental problems facing our society?           The nature is damaged by tunnels and road construction, and wild animals lose their homes and often come down to villages where people live and do harm. Every year, there is a problem with this in the news. And I think it is also a problem that wild animals pop out when driving. I heard that this is because the facilities built in Korea to allow animals such as ecological bridges to pass through other safe places, other than roads, are not functioning properly. I think this situation is a major environmental problem because nature is destroyed, so there is less space for wild animals to live in, and it is a problem for both humans and wild animals.

W6 Sustainable_development /SooBin Moon

Sustainable development   Summary)   Sustainable development means the development of the environment for human needs with the development of desirable results, but the perfection and stability of the natural ecosystem means the development without destruction. This concept of sustainable development began with the need for education to solve environmental problems. A sustainable development plan is made at the intersection of three components: society, environment and economy. For this sustainable development, technology must be developed to make development eco-friendly. Such sustainable development is drawing attention, but some criticize it as a vague concept.          What's interesting, what's new?)   I was impressed by the criticism that sustainable development was a vague concept. Development will inevitably destroy nature and the environment naturally, but wouldn't I be able to destroy nature less if I h...
