W7. What does a sustainable future actually look like? / Juhee Cha
1. Summary
"Sustainable development is development that meets current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.". This definition doesn't really tell us what sustainability looks like. There are four suggestions for understanding sustainability. It's subdivisions, materializations, objects of benefit, imaginations of a sustainable society.
2. Interesting Point
I sympathized with this context. When I read an article about a sustainable society in the sixth week, I understood its concept but could not imagine what kind of society it was specifically. The reason is that I thought about how it applies to the large scope of society. It should ask specific and subdivided questions to society, such as how long it is sustainable, which areas it applies to, who is affected and who is harmed. If so, I think a sustainable society will be portrayed.
3. Discussion
I want to know an example of a society in which sustainable development is taking place. I'd like to hear the question of how long it lasts, where it's progress, and who's.

I want to talk about the city of Curitiba, Brazil. This city is famous for being an ecological city. In particular, the city pushed for "public transportation-oriented urban development" for a sustainable urban transport system. Through the development of high-density compressed cities in the form of linear concentration around the public transportation axis, most of the major functions such as parks, shops, schools, churches, workplaces and homes were built by concentrating within 500 meters. In addition, five main roads in the city center were designated as "traffic quiet areas" to limit them to 40 kilometers per hour and plant trees intensively to absorb pollutants and improve air quality.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you can read more about this city through googling, too :)
