W6 Reading: Positive Development/ joon hee Lee

PD(Positive Development) theory is based on the ecological philosophy that emerged in the 1980s. According to this, the existing institutional and physical structures reduce future’s choices. It argues that a truly sustainable framework of planning, decision and design is realized by transforming a negative system into a positive one. PD proposes ways to enable net positive design and development. Coming from the theory, "Net Positive" is a new paradigm for sustainable development and design. A net positive system/structure will be said to 'give more back to nature and society' over each life cycle. In contrast, such as loss of biodiversity, cumulative pollution, wealth imbalance and social inequality. In order to reverse the future direction, development must increase nature beyond the pre-human condition.

The original principle of sustainability (natural conservation and equity between current and future generations) focuses more on the future. Accordingly, life-support systems (natural) should be increased for development purposes. Green design always aims at ecological restoration, social regeneration and economic revitalization. But these give essentially "value-added" to the current site, building or practice. In this structure, they never increase nature. PD seeks to create a structure that enhances the quality of universal life and future options by expanding the "ecological base" (ecosystems, ecological transport capabilities and biodiversity) and "public property" (the universal access to the means of survival/well-being and social capital).

The term "net positive" is widely used by green designers, developers and companies. However, it usually has the meaning of a "return" that optimizes material resources, energy and stakeholder interests as there is no fixed standard. This was the goal of designing green buildings in the 20th century. Although environmental ethics and social justice remain the central concerns of the PD, "ecological positivity" is increasingly drawing attention to emphasize the ecological dimension. The term 'net' also causes some confusion. In the PD, "net" means the public interest beyond neutral influence. For example, do +, not just reduce the total negative impact to zero!

As one of the various aspects of sustainable development, I felt that PD Theory had its own vision. There was a similar content to the sustainable development I read before, but I felt that PD Theory presented more systems for us to practice. Also, it seems that he did not just care about nature, but emphasized the harmony between society and nature more.
