The role of NGOs and civil society

in development and poverty reduction

Summary)

I read the following article to find out what role NGOs are playing in a situation where the role of NGOs has been prominent since the late 1970s. Countries that are poor, financially limited and suffering from poor governance, such as many developing countries, have also failed to help improve the environment in which citizens can live due to severe corruption. Thus, NGOs appeared and played roles that countries did not perform. And often there is controversy over the location and classification of NGOs.

NGOs may form positive relationships with each other, although they often have friction with local and national governments. However, it is the same for NGOs to dream of a better society when they are in conflict with the government and when they collaborate. The form of NGOs has changed and increased over time. So now the NGO deals with various areas in its role as a service provider, including subsistence arbitration, health and education services, and more specific areas such as emergency response, democratic establishment, conflict, and resolution, human rights, financial, environmental management and policy analysis.

What's interesting, what's new?)

NGOs no longer act as mere welfare service providers. Since the late 1990s, NGOs have seen it as a systematic implementation of civil society and have also emphasized its role as an organization leading democratic development. The NGO political role is becoming important. I thought that the scope of NGOs' influence was becoming more diverse and there was a debate about their location and role.

The part I want to discuss with others)

Do you think it is helpful for social development to be limited to simply playing the role of welfare sectors that the state is not doing? Or do you think NGOs should even play a political role in realizing a democratic society? (I hope you will personally define NGOs in relation to your role.)
