W9. Demographics / Lee Se Hyun

Summary

Demographics is the study of analyzing population changes over time and is used as a tool to analyze social phenomena at a macro level. Demographics can explain the occurrence of phenomena across society, education, religion and ethnicity. Because demographics are interested in changes in the population, it focuses mainly on fertility and mortality. In the case of fertility rates, the higher the educational attainment of women, the lower the birthrate tends to be. But education itself is not the cause of the decline in the birthrate. There is a link to other factors in the declining birthrate. The death rate is the same as the birth rates. Statistics on fertility and mortality can predict problems with overpopulation and suggest solutions. It can also predict problems with population shortages and provide solutions. Demographics is not just about making statistics about the population. To calculate and analyze statistical data to find the causes of various social phenomena, problems, and come up with solutions.

Interesting point

It was interesting to explain society through demographics. As an example of the writing, he looked at the cause of the outbreak of World War I with a demographic perspective as intensifying competition for resources such as food, land, trade routes and ports. I think this proves to be complex and organic in society. I am interested in the complexity of society. Therefore, I think the demographic view is an interesting study in that it provides a diverse perspective on social phenomena. It was also interesting that education has a high correlation between birth rate and death rate, and I would like to analyze it in depth if I have a chance.
Statistical data is used a lot to explain various social problems these days.

Question

Statistical data have a macro approach to phenomena. Therefore, it is often the case that the internal situation is missed. What methods should we use to overcome this?
