WK 6.2 Article Sustainable City - Hanane Ben Abdeslam

Sustainable city is a city designed with consideration for social, economic and environmental impact. These cities are inhabited by people whom are dedicated towards minimizing required inputs of energy, water, food, waste, output of heat, air pollution and water pollution. According to the reading, there are different definitions for this term but many experts agree that a sustainable city should meet the needs of the present without sacrificing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The key within this idea leads to a great deal of variation in terms of how cities carry out their attempts to become sustainable. To refer as a sustainable city, four domains are obligated: ecology, economics, politics, and culture. If a city accomplishes to establish these four domains, then the sustainability of the city is able to feed itself with sustainable reliance on the surrounding natural environment, and have the ability to power itself with renewable sources of energy.
There are distinct advantages to further defining and working towards the goals of sustainable cities. Humans are social creatures and thrive in urban spaces that foster social connections.

Moreover, I find it interesting that the author is describing that cities needs to be more than a competitive business climate. They need to be a great people climate that appeals to individuals and families of all types. In this way, urban living would provide an outlet for social interaction and conditions under which humans can prosper. Finally, these types of urban areas would also promote the use of public transit, walkability and biking which would benefit citizens health wise, but also be environmentally beneficial.

In the reading I’ve been writing about public transport, has your country accomplished in increasing in pedestrianization to reduce car emissions?

  1. The Seoul metropolitan area is supplying CNG buses that do not emit smoke to reduce car emissions. It is also expanding roads for bicycles and pedestrians. Seoul City is more concerned about securing public transportation than pedestrians.
