W4. Millennium Development Goals/ Kim Seonghui

1. Summary
Millennium Development Goals, or MDGs, were eight international development goals in 2015.

The eight objectives are as follows. 1. To eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2. To achieve universal primary education 3. To promote gender equality and empower women 4. To reduce child mortality 5. To improve maternal health 6. To combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases 7. To ensure environmental sustainability 8. To develop a global partnership for development

Some critics analyzed the investigation and absence of explanations for the determined goal. Also, the hardness or absence of measurement for some goals. And criticized the irregular progress. More than half of this aid has been used to reduce their debt. And most of the rest were used for natural disaster relief and military support rather than for extra development.
Nevertheless, improving the living environment of developing countries through MDGs has helped their development. For one example, healthy workers could be inspired not to leave for other places that suggest a better lifestyle for their country. Therefore, they worked in their country so that the country could develop.

2. New/Interesting
I felt these eight goals were pretty well-designed, but when I heard the critics' opinions, I found that I couldn't say they were perfect. In particular, MDG8 is said to focus on the performance of donors. In addition, the entire process didn't include the voices of the very participants that the MDG wants to support. I think these criticisms show that developed countries are approaching developing countries only with a condescending attitude.

3. Discussion
These international organization development goals tend to be selected and determined based on the opinions of developed countries. I think such a decision is more of a condescending attitude of developing countries than an equal. So how should we set our development goals of the world to create a better world?

Comments

  1. The word global harmony is perhaps easy. However, each country will not put other countries ahead of its own. It's not selfish, it's natural.

After all, the most important thing is that each country should ensure a minimum living. In that, advanced countries will develop further, but developing or developing countries will also be able to receive opportunities for development. In other words, I think the goal is to give developing countries opportunities for development and its first step is to "live environment."
