W4. Free Culture Movement / Lee Se Hyun
Summary
The Free Culture
Movement is a movement against overly limited copyrights. Many participants in
the movement argue that overly restrictive copyright laws hinder creativity.
The movement began with opposition to the copyright law called Mickey Mouse
Protection Act. The Free Culture Movement took place in 2001, starting with the
Creative Commons (CC), an alternative "hold all rights" licensing
system for the "hold all rights" copyright system. They encourage
creative work sharing and the spread of ideas for cultural activities,
scientific progress and business innovation.
Opinion
Copyright law may
be the most difficult law to define standards. Ensuring a creator's income
activities hinders creativity, and guaranteeing creativity puts the creator's
livelihood at risk. Currently, various media platforms emerge and creative
attempts are overflowing. I think this situation is a period of cultural
change. Copyright laws in a period of cultural change have a lot of influence.
Positive or negative. Therefore, the development of culture should be induced
through the correct setting of direction.
Question
It has become
difficult to distinguish plagiarism in a free culture. As Ugly Shoes became
popular in 2019, shoes of the same design came from many brands, making
headlines. What do you think are the conditions for distinguishing plagiarism?

What is free culture and how it can help with social development?
Free culture
breaks people's stereotypes. Free culture has new attempts to upset people's
stereotypes. Currently, the fashion industry is a prime example. The fashion
trend is genderless. It breaks the stereotype that a woman is wearing a skirt
and a man is wearing pants. Also, elegant fashion brands have changed their
brand logos. Maison Martin Margiela, Maison Margiela, Yves Saint Laurent to St.
Laurent of Paris. It claims genderless by changing the name of the brand that
had a male name. Their work has also changed in a disassembly way. This
innovative change in free culture causes social development. The fashion
world's genderless moves have changed people's perceptions and caused positive
effects of changing perceptions. Also, their innovative attempts have inspired
various fields. Innovative changes in the free culture have caused social
development and the potential for development cannot be measured. Therefore,
free culture affects social development and it is impossible to measure how it
can be helpful.
