W13.2 The Role of Ethnic Groups in Social Development

The article presents the correlation between Social Development and Ethnic Groups. I show its framework. The author notes that the approach the role of ethnic groups in social development critically when it comes to the so-called Third World countries in general and South Asia countries in particular. One of the factors that make social development possible is the mobilization of and actions of the groups in society. moreover, social development is an even more complex concept than economic development. The authors examines also the ethnic solidarity. When it occurs and what are the factors that make thee ethnic solidarity actually work. Another concern in the publication is social development and equal distribution of the benefits of development. These days no country is fully homogenous in terms of race, religion, language, script, customs, ideas, and ways of life. The role of the ethnic groups raised because there is an emphasis on larger collectivities. The debated concepts are complicated, that's why even defying the ethnic groups or social development itself is not an easy matter for the author. The ethnic group is defined as a segment of a larger society. Its members consider themselves or others that they have something in common that makes them distinguish from others. Whether it's a common culture, origins, or shared activities. More specifically it was described by Cohen as a collective of people sharing some normative behavior. On the other hand, the concept of ethnic groups includes also the individual's awareness of identity, the sense of belonging, emotional attachment, and common interest. What is important is that ethnic doesn't always imply to the racial, religious, or nationalistic aspects, it's also or foremost, a sense of peoplehood.

It's interesting that those topics such as ethnicity are being expanded and once again thought through. I think it gives much more complex view at this topic and to understand its influence. Also because of the constantly changing world, I think those topics need further expansion/redefinitions.

Do you think that a feeling of being a part of an ethnic group and working for a common goal enabled somehow your country to achieve some social development achievements?
