Why men and women chose
different fields to study?
In Korea, girls are more likely to specialize in humanities, such as language, and boys are more likely to specialize in math and science, such as science and engineering. I think the first reason is that the prevailing opinion is that girls are good at humanities and boys are good at math and science. Many students are educated in Korea and are influenced by this opinion from childhood.
The second reason is that it may be difficult for students of different sexes to succeed in academic fields where gender ratios are already one-sided in Korea. For example, my friend went to a civil engineering department with a gender of women but many men. But I often saw him thinking about whether to change his major because he experienced discrimination because he was a woman when he was taking classes or going on field trips from his professor. I think this second reason is strong and the fields where men and women study in Korea are different.
