Why do you think this is the case?

Poverty in Korea is affecting mostly the elderly.


     I thought about the reason why elderly poverty problem is serious in Korea. There are many causes. First, the concept of family and support has changed. In the past, supporting parents was taken for granted, but today the economic situation of middle-aged people has worsened, the perception and concept of family has changed, and the idea that children do not necessarily have to support their parents has also spread. Under these circumstances, many elderly people living alone have no financial support from their children, even if they have children.

     Second, although the average life expectancy of humans has increased, the current generation of senior citizens was busy maintaining their current lives at a time when they were actively engaged in economic activities in the past, and the idea of the need for future retirement funds was not popular. In other words, the post-retirement life of a job, an economic means, has been prolonged in the absence of economic surplus funds.

     In addition, there may be many other reasons for the poverty of the elderly in Korea, including the economic difficulty of farming, which is mainly for the elderly. What should be noted here is that our country is getting older. Therefore, the government has created a policy to support the elderly in financial difficulties to solve these problems. But I think we need a relatively active solution as well as these short-term solutions.  

    Taking into account the increased life expectancy of humans, the government is utilizing a population that is fully capable of economic activities after retirement. To provide them with public jobs or to help them get reemployment. In addition, the increase in the number of senior citizens and the number of young people who are able to engage in economic activities has decreased, and the average number of dependents has to be addressed.
