W12. Gender and Poverty/김윤(KIM YOON)

Summary

Poverty and gender have a complex yet deep connection. This paper is based on the theme of 'Women are poorer?' and deals largely with three main points. The first is that "women will have a higher degree of poverty than men," the second is "women's poverty is more extreme than men's," and the third is "the degree of poverty surrounding women increases over time compared to men." According to the paper, women's weak social status and mobility restrictions have limited their economic feasibility. In particular, gender inequality leads to nutritional inequality, educational inequality and labor inequality in several countries, including Nigeria and Syria. Today there is an argument that the definition of poverty should be expanded compared to the past, which not only involves economic power but also includes a lack of authority and autonomy. The paper also states that poverty should be dealt with in a multi-dimensional way and that a new and innovative approach to women's organizing should be taken.

Interesting

One of the interesting things was dealing with poverty and gender in terms of the head of the household. The patriarchal system, which had been strictly male-centered in the past, restricted competent women from entering society and locked them in the clutches of childcare and housework. I also think we should avoid excessive restrictions on one side of the activity.

Discussion

Think about Korea now. Do you think women are still poorer than men than in the past?

Comments

  1. I took a critical view of the content of this paper. Before discussing Korea, I think the link between gender and poverty should be viewed differently by country. We also wonder how the link between gender and poverty will change in a few years. In the past, industries were male-dominated, physically and physically demanding. But now is the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which can be called intellectual labor. Compared to the past, the proportion of women entering society has increased significantly. I expect it to be better in the future.
