WK 9.1 Demography – Hanane Ben Abdeslam
Demography shows how the human population is constantly changing. It shows the changes of the structure and distributions of populations, and how populations change over time due to births, deaths, migration, and aging. Demographic analysis can relate to whole societies or to smaller groups defined by criteria such as education, religion, or ethnicity. Because demography is interested in changes in human populations, demographers focus on specific indicators of change, which are the two key indicators birth and death rates. Additionally, demographers are also interested in migration trends or the movement of people from one location to another, for example a person from The Netherlands moves to South Korea to live there. If the movement from one country to another country is increasing, it will be called ‘overpopulation’. In this case it indicates in which the population of a living species exceeds the carrying capacity of its ecological niche. Overpopulation is not a function of the number or density of the individuals, but rather the number of individuals compared to the resources they need to survive. For example, if an environment has a population of 10 people, but there is food and water enough for only 9 people, then the environment is overpopulated. If it is the opposite, then it is not overpopulated.
What I find interesting is that there are many countries with more people than supplies to survive. I’ve only learned from this learning what the consequences could be, but not how to provide it. I think that there has to be a way to ensure enough supplies for every single citizen, so that they don’t have to live in the streets without anything to survive.
Due to overcrowded population, in many countries people who cannot afford the supplies they need in order to survive, end up in slums, or even worse, on the streets. I’ve noticed here in South Korea there are a lot of homeless people, is it because Korea is overpopulated or has it to do with other problems? If so, what kind of problems, and do you know if the government is doing the best, they can to prevent this problem?
