WK 8.1 The internet – Hanane Ben Abdeslam

Technology is needed to develop new technical solutions and products. Technology is mainly about new technical concepts, and as a result it Is closely linked to innovations. However, innovation is generally described as coming up with and developing new ideas. With technology it enables new innovations to be developed and produced, and vice versa. Moreover, technology can also be the knowledge of techniques, processes etc. or it can be referred to machines, computers, devices and factories. As an example of modern technology, is the mobile phone. Everyone uses it because with our phones we can stay in touch with friends, family, colleagues etc.  The introduction to the mobile phone has led to a number of changes in our society, like changing social mores. For example, the author uses a survey from the United States which states that there are specific times when people believe it is okay to use a mobile phone, and other times when it is inappropriate. Moreover, it also shows that many people believe that it is okay to use your mobile phone while walking down the street, or at the dinner table. Furthermore, technology also affected our social networks, like developing business networks or staying in touch with friends and family who live far away. However, some people are posting pictures of themselves and their friends engaging in a risky behavior, like drinking alcohol, clubbing, or using drugs. By posting this kind of pictures or videos could damage their future, especially if they want to apply for a job later, and their boss is going through their social media accounts.

I’ve always been interested in how the mobile phone is changing the society. I still find it ridiculous that everyone is so addicted to their phones, and that everything that they do, has to be a picture of to post it on their social media account. It also surprises me that when I’m in the subway in Korea that every single person is literally drowning in their phones and not paying attention to the outside world. 

We use technology for different goods but there are also disadvantages of technological developments. In my opinion, I do believe that technology could be used as a knife, to cut bread, but also to seriously injure someone. Artificial intelligence, privacy, social distinction and simulism are technological developments where I think of that’s dangerous. Could you come up with another technological developments that could be dangerous to the society?

What is meant by that? / Lee hayoung

Q. Society is not determined by technology, nor is technology determined by society. Both emerge as two sides of the sociotechnical coin. What is meant by that? A. So to begin with, I think that society and technology are the relationships that influence each other, the concepts that one cannot include or dominate.
