Why Our World Is Aging / Kim Yoon (김윤)

Summary

The world's population is aging rapidly and various problems are raised. In particular, it is one of the serious and important issues to address the decline in the production population caused by an increase in the number of senior citizens and a decrease in the birthrate. Among the reasons for the increase in the elderly population are increased life expectancy and urbanization. With the exception of Midwest Africa, most countries, including some developing countries, have at least 1.6 births and at most 2.5 births. As the elderly population grows, the family network also changes. In particular, the burden on the sandwich generation continues to grow. Also, as more elderly people live alone, family-to-family exchanges decrease. It says in the article that the elderly population is still an important productive population and can be social capital. The nation will have to be able to actively respond to global changes so as to trigger the potential of the aged population.

Interesting

I was interested in the sandwich generation. In Asia, 20 percent of the population belongs to the sandwich generation, according to an article. In other words, one out of every five working age population is a sandwich generation. They are likely to overdo their work to earn support and living expenses. Also, there was a high rate of pessimism about life after they retired. I could imagine Korea's aging society and the society I would go through in the future.

Discussion

When it comes to formulating policies to guarantee job growth for senior citizens, there could be a controversy over reverse discrimination in this regard. What do you think about this?
