Week 8 | Digital Divide | Lee Jaeseong

1. Summary
Digital Divide can be defined according to social, geographical, or geopolitical standards. The infrastructure that individuals, homes, businesses and communications connect to the Internet includes desktop computers, mobile phones and smartphones. I thought an increase in digital devices would reduce the digital divide between individuals. However, this does not decrease but opens up again with new innovations.
Digital Divide exists for many reasons. There are a variety of reasons, including income, education, race and gender. In particular, the racial gap is the largest. Black people use the Internet about 70 percent, while whites and Asians use more than 80 percent. Even in age, the younger you are, the greater the gap is.
To overcome this, it is necessary to improve social and cultural capital, improve productivity in large quantities, and enable individuals to connect.
CI (Community Informatcs) focuses on "use" issues, providing a new way to address Digital Divide.
Digital Divide is also a big problem around the world wide. To solve this problem, there are the following.
1. Economic equality
2. Social mobility
3. Democracy
4. Economic Growth

2. Interesting Point
I was born in a very lucky country. This is because the Internet is also a well-known country. We enjoy many conveniences through the Internet. However, it is said that most countries do not. China, which has a good Internet presence, is said to be heavily censored even now in 2020. I think this gap must be restored at a time when the fourth industrial revolution is approaching in the 21st century.

3. Discussion
Will the Digital Divide disappear if everyone can use the Internet? What do you think?

Comments

  1. I think there will be a digital divide even if everyone can use the Internet. This is because the amount and quality of information that can be obtained using the Internet depends on the individual's ability. In addition, today there are several policies to protect the copyrights of materials with property. With the implementation of these policies, it is often necessary to pay a certain amount of money to have access to information. In this case, even if everyone can use the Internet, only those who have the financial ability to purchase and access the information can obtain it.
