W9.2 Ageing / Juhee Cha

1.Summary
Along with the steady improvement in life expectancy in the late 20th century, the declining birthrate has led to a dramatic increase in the elderly. This trend has had a tremendous impact on many countries around the world because of their potential to overburden the existing social system for the elderly. An important policy problem due to aging is emerging. There are retirement pension issues, personal income guarantees, health and health issues. Childbirths in developed countries are low, while those in the middle and western parts of Africa are high. However, developing countries are also seeing a sharp decline in fertility rates. It is facing an aging society around the world.

2.Interresting Point
We were always aware of the various problems that occurred when our society became an aging society. However, as time goes by, the proportion of the elderly population in our society is increasing. I know that life expectancy improvement, birth rate, is the cause, but I think it will be difficult to solve the cause. In order to solve the cause, the birth rate needs to be raised, and many people's perceptions have changed due to the increase in the career woman ratio and the burden of just making a living for an individual. The government is implementing a policy to encourage childbirth, but I am not sure if it is effective. It is also important to solve the causes, but why not focus on creating jobs for the elderly, health and health systems to create a society in which senior citizens can participate in social life?

3.Discussion
The current definition is that the elderly are over 65 years old. Do you think the definition of the elderly is appropriate in today's society, which is improving the life span of the elderly population? Or do you think it should be higher?

Comments

  1. I think the word 'old man' should be redefined. As you can see in this article, the increase in life expectancy and the advancement of medical technology have allowed humans to do more and more. A 65-year-old, formerly called an old man, is different from the current 65. The person I know is in his 60s and still enjoys playing golf. It is very different in many ways from the past when death was imminent.
