W9. Demography/ Kim Seonghui
1. Summary
Demographics is a tool for analyzing social phenomena at a macro level. It mainly uses data such as birth, death, etc. The higher the level of education for women, the lower the fertility rate. But education itself does not mean that the birth rate is lowered. Childbirths are related to the degree of development in the country. Death rates are also somewhat related to the extent of the country's development. In developing countries, infant mortality was higher. The world population is growing every year, which could also lead to overpopulation. To solve this problem, there are ways to protect the local environment and improve women's rights. Urbanization rates vary from country to country but are expected to increase steadily worldwide. Urbanization affects the environment, economy, and so on.
2. New/Interesting
This was interesting because I didn't think demographics could play an important role in identifying social phenomena. I've often been told that low birth rates are a problem, so it's rather surprising that the current world population is increasing by about 80 million every year. I've learned that in some developed countries, counter-urbanization is happening. Similar to suburbanization, it's happening in the opposite direction to urbanization, and why it's happening like that is impressive to me.
3. Discussion
In many countries like Korea, the low birth rate is now a problem. But on a global scale, the population may be overpopulated. What do you think? What seems to be the closest problem to us now?
