W9. Aging / Kim Seon Woo

Summary

The world's population is aging faster than ever. These demographic changes create problems for the healthcare system that the government had never imagined before. The biggest of these is how the government can absorb the growing demand of the aging population for the healthcare system at the same time as the proportion of young and competent workers decreases. Aging and fertility have historically been considered economic indicators. Youth and fertility represent prosperity and economic growth, and population aging and contraction are related to economic shrinkage. This traditional thinking missed an opportunity. Seismic changes are needed in the way policymakers respond to aging so that the country can maximize its potential for the aging population.

Interesting Point

It was interesting to note the positive aspects of an aging society. Korea is also an aging society, and it is important not to look at it negatively but to take advantage of it.

Discussion

How do you improve the productivity of older workers?
