W8.Technology, the Internet, and Virtual Worlds/Lim Ji Won

It was related to cell phones, video games, novel network services, etc., which are newly being researched in social science field.

The most representative modern technology is cell phone. Cell phones are owned by almost all people in developed countries, and this has transformed social customs into revolutionary levels. On the contrary, however, there have been cases in which people feel very anxious when they are too dependent on cell phones to use them.

Social network services have the great advantage of being able to keep in touch with family and friends who live far away, but there are also disadvantages that SNS activities have taken out time for other activities such as work and study, and that their postings may have a negative impact on themselves in the future.

The most interesting thing was that even digital spaces represented by SNS existed inequality in the real world. Digital space is available to relatively anyone, and although it is a free space, it is quite surprising that even in such a space, it cannot play a 100% role in resolving inequality.

One of the most prominent critics of SNS is Alex Ferguson's remarks, who was the director of Manchester United F.C. He raised the following criticism on Twitter, one of the social media platforms."How do you find the time to do that? There are a million things you can do in your life without that.Seriously. It is a waste of time."What do you think of this argument?

  1. I think SNS can be an extension of life, but it's not a real life. It's a reflection of real life. Of course people can get chances for doing something else on SNS. But SNS is full of information and photos that have been edited stimulatingly or ideally. SNS could be a waste of life if people uncritically accept it and compare it to their lives endlessly.

  2. I think the reason he said that is because he wanted to tell everyone not to be too obsessed with SNS. Sometimes I don't think SNS is necessary in our lives like him. But if someone uses SNS for leisure, I don't think they can blame those who use it. We can't just do productive work every day. We sometimes play games or read comic books in our free time. So should people who enjoy leisure like this be criticized like SNS users? I don't think so.
