W7. Synthetic meat/ Kim Seonghui

1. Summary
The main purpose of Synthetic meat technology is to keep quality intact or find better ways to meet human needs and needs cheaply and efficiently. This fact should be kept in mind when making synthetic foods because food is not just a body maintenance tool.
In the case of beef, a substance that digests a piece of meat and converts it into a treatable form then puts it in an experimental solution and separates the molecules according to their physical properties. Analyze how each element's taste affects, and scientists assemble these elements or copy them to a meat printer.
The cells in the petri dish can be divided into more cells as long as they are fed and shape and size that we want. This technology will have a great ripple effect in other areas as well. For example, it can be applied to various medical technologies such as organ culture and organ cloning.

2. New/Interesting
I think synthetic meat is a sustainable way to solve the environmental and ethical problems that meat brings. In addition, it was most impressive to hear that it might be applicable to medical technology. Although there is a part that animal blood should be extracted and used to make culture meat, I think it is a little more ethical to draw blood than slaughter, as the Youtuber suggests.

3. Discussion
What would you choose if you had synthetic meat or meat? On the premise that the texture, appearance, and price of the two meat are the same. Why would you choose it?

Comments

  1. It will take time to change people's perception when synthetic meat is first introduced. I think the fact that it was made artificially will be difficult to bring people's preferences. But I think it would help change many people's perception if they emphasize that synthetic meat is a product that can solves environmental problems, ethical problems, even animal rights.
