Summary

Sustainable Development (SD) is a development that meets the needs of the current generation without detracting from the basis for future generations to meet their needs. This means that while meeting the needs of the current generation, without destroying the possibilities of future generations, the human society has the opportunity to develop freely in harmony with the surrounding environment. This concept originated from the will of mankind to enjoy a prosperous life by coexisting with nature and solving global problems derived from population growth and economic growth. The term was first officially announced through the `` Our Common Future '' presented by the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) in 1987. Since then, sustainable development has been widely interpreted as related to maintaining sustainability not only in the environment but also in the social and economic sectors through various discussions over a long period of time. In addition, the concept of sustainable development is not fixed, but has a constantly changing characteristic. Therefore, each country and region is interpreted and applied according to their situation while considering the historical meaning of the process of forming the concept of sustainable development.

Interesting Point

Sustainable development has a limitation in that it is still lacking a consistent explanation of the concept and can be misled by political logic or mainstream or confused with economic growth due to the nature of the concept of inclusiveness. According to Engelman, president of the World Watch Institute, we live in the 'sustainable overage', where we use the word 'sustainable' to the ears to describe something from environmentally better to cool. (Engelman, 2013). He is concerned that this phenomenon of sustainability may be a hindrance to sustainable development. He points out that the adjective “sustainability” is used in a way that is different from the original meaning and “is more beneficial to the environment than other ways”.

Discussion

What are the clear standards for interpretation of sustainable development by country and local government?
