W10.Human Rights and Asian Values/Lim Ji Won
Since World War II, discussions on human rights have progressed rapidly in people through international human rights movements. It was the Holocaust and the irrational part of capitalism that led to this rapid progress.
Human rights in Western societies generally tended to support universal human rights, but Asian countries raised criticism that it was a one-sided sermon that did not take into account the cultural diversity of Asian countries. Supporters of universal human rights responded with criticism that the claim was from an extreme cultural relativism perspective.
I think it is interesting enough that cultural differences between East and West can be applied differently to the universal value of human rights. Although human rights also contain absolute and universal values, I think it is natural in some ways that the East and the West differ in detail.
Do you think human rights should have an absolutely universal view? Or do you think cultural relativity should be considered? If you support human rights from an absolutely universal perspective, what items would you like to include in the details?
