W10. Human Rights and Asian Values / Lee Se Hyun

Summary

There has been a long discussion of human rights but not enough. The Holocaust highlighted the importance of human rights that had been neglected through World War II, and discussions on human rights began in a radical and full-fledged manner after the end of the war.
Human rights in Western society generally looked at human rights from a universalist perspective. Asian society looked at human rights from the opposite relativist point of view. They argued that discussions and consideration of human rights were centered on the West. The reason was that Western countries colonized most of the Asian countries in the days of imperialism and held them responsible for the resulting human rights violations. They criticized the sudden human rights debate. They also argued that the standards of human rights should reflect their own specific circumstances, arguing that universal human rights ignore cultural relativism. On the other hand, universal human rights advocates criticized them for being extreme cultural relativists and having many moral problems.

Interesting point

As with previous writings, the difference in values was interesting. When looking at human rights in their respective values, their arguments are correct. But if you look at their arguments with different values, they are wrong. I support universalist human rights, but given the historical facts of the time, I can understand the claims of the Asian nation. They are like oil and water, so they are hard to mix. Culture should be respected as a product of human behavior accumulated over a long period of time. But if it's the wrong culture, we have to make a difference. It will take a lot of effort to reach an agreement on universal and relativistic human rights.

Question

It follows universal human rights in the UN. But I think that relativist human rights should also be guaranteed. The absolute guarantee of relativistic human rights will create a problem of human rights violations. To what extent should we embrace relativist human rights? Or should it not be accepted?
