Aging World/ Changyu Jung
The world's population is aging rapidly. One of the main factors behind this is an increase in life expectancy. Since the 1900s, life expectancy has increased significantly with improvements in public health and control of infectious diseases. Then, the birth rate also has been decreasing. Today, the average number of women's children is less than 2.5, and about half of the world's population lives in countries with a lower birthrate than the replacement rate. Young people migrate to cities or rich countries, which has led to a sharp increase in the number of elderly people living alone in many countries. This phenomenon is causing big problems. Labor and pension issues are the biggest problems. To solve these problems, countries need to share information and collect data among countries for research.
What was interesting was that the shape of the family was changing. The number of elderly people living alone is increasing, and the younger generation is separated from their parents and families in cities. This change causes the younger generation to face pressure to take care of elderly parents and children. A change has occurred in the form of the family and their role. These generations are called the sandwich generation. This generation feels a burden of double responsibility.
What efforts should we make to reduce the burden felt by these generations? What policies should the state consider?
