WK 6.1 Sustainable development - Hanane Ben Abdeslam

Sustainable development has been defined in many ways, but the most frequently definition is also known as “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. These needs come from resources such as economy and society services. Back in 1987 the term was about sustainable forest management and other environmental concerns. However, as the concept developed, it had more focus on the economic- and social development, and environmental protection for future generations. Moreover, I defined a few definitions of the term but the subject is still been criticized by others. It has been argued that there is no such thing as a sustainable use, and that the meaning of the concept has been stretched from ‘conservation management’ to ‘economic development’. One claim comes from the United Nations, which they say that the term sustainable development is used for both issues that associates with land development and broader issues of human development such as education, public health, and standard of living.

What I found interesting in this reading, is the main definition of sustainable development. It is also new to me that there are two key concepts: 1. The concept of ‘needs’, the essential needs of the world’s poor and 2. The idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment’s ability to meet present and future needs.

Sustainability is the foundation for today’s leading global framework for international cooperation, the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and its goals (SDGs). A few weeks ago, we had to right a blog about these goals, which goals is the most value to you?

  1. Goal 16 is pretty most valuable for me. The goal promotes peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provides access to justice for all, and builds effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels. So I think that sounds like a goal to move away from the most fundamental parts, such as hunger, and take a step further to create a better world.
