WK 4.1 Extra The usefulness of MDG-related comics - Hanane Ben Abdeslam
Millenium Development Goal 5. Improve Maternal Health
There are eight different comics based on one of the eight Millennium Development Goals.
The comic which I found interesting is the comic book about improving Maternal Health.
More than 500,000 women die each year from complications from pregnancy and childbirth. In addition, more than 50 million women suffer from ill health and serious pregnancy-related illness and disability. The reason for this is because these women usually undergo their own pregnancy and childbirth without any help from medical professionals, such as doctors and nurses. The comic book shows that the presence of an obstetrician can mean the difference between life and death. The example of “Chakori” was used, she is a woman who knows a lot about childbirth in the book. How the combination with the MDG came about is because the MDG No. 5 of the United Nations aims to reduce the number of women dying from pregnancy and childbirth. They want to achieve this through reproductive rights, such as education and access to family extension techniques, increasing the availability of medical professionals and finally access to medicines and vaccinations.
In the comic there were different ways on how to make a difference in your community, like fundraising, building a birthing hut and giving a program to woman. How do you think you could help if you were in a situation where you know someone that has a lot of risks by delivering her baby?
