Week 6-1 | Sustainable Development | Lee Jaeseong

1. Summary

Sustainable development means a development that prepares for environmental destruction at the same time as social development. The root of sustainable development is rooted in the idea of sustainable forest management in the 17th and 18th centuries. The idea is for the state to manage the trees directly. This idea developed and influenced the environmental movement in the 1960s.

Education for Sustainable Development is an education that promotes changes in technology, values and attitudes, enabling a sustainable and equitable society. With the launch of the U.N. Education for Sustainable Development in 2005, the global movement began.

There are three (and one more) subgroups of sustainable development.

1. Environment
Also called human ecology, it talks about the relationship between humans and the natural, social and architectural environment. The essential activities are research and innovation activities. Agriculture forms an environmentally friendly farming method that can produce crops or livestock without damaging the natural system.

2. Economics
It was suggested that environmental resources should be treated as important economic assets. In the early 1970s, the concept of sustainability was used to describe the 'economy' that balances with the basic ecological support system. In environmental economics, the development of economies around the world puts a strain on the natural environment. Therefore, it is the study of finding solutions without sacrificing the public interest. In addition, various subgroups of energy, manufacturing and technology exist under economics.

3. Politics
6 Connectivity Policy Framework to Sustainability Index: 1) International Trade and Investment 2) Economic Policy 3) Climate Change and Energy 4) Measurement and Evaluation 5) Natural Resource Management 6) Communication Technology
Sub Area of the United Nations: 1) Organization and Governance 2) Law and Justice 3) Communications and Criticism 4) Representative and Negotiation 5) Security 6) Dialogue and Reconciliation 7) Ethics and Responsibility

(4. Culture)
Some scholars talk about culture as a fourth subgroup. This includes human-centered design and life cycle analysis.

 2. Interesting Point

The word sustainable development is a story that I've heard tirelessly in middle and high school classes. It turned out that this was education for sustainable development promoted by Un. Thanks to this, we could easily see why sustainable development is necessary and how it is being done.

3. Discussion

Sustainable development is also centered around the well-developed Western world. So, should developing countries or developing countries that have not developed properly put priority on sustainable development? Economic growth comes first? Environment comes first? What do you think?

Comments

  1. I don't think developed countries have the right to stop the development of developing countries. The current environment has been destroyed by reckless development by advanced countries. Much effort should be made to bring the current environment back to the past, but it should not go in the direction of regulating the development of developing countries. Because they have to survive, too. Therefore, I think countries should work together to ensure that developing countries can make sustainable development and live well with each other.
