Week 4 | Free Culture Movement | Lee Jaeseong

Lawrence Lessig stands in front of a laptop that reads "Free Culture."

Summary
Free Culture Movement is a social movement that promotes freedom of distributing and modifying creative works as free content using the Internet and other media. The contrasting concepts are copyright and copyright. In other words, it is against excessively restrictive copyright laws.
The movement began in the late 1960s when Stewart Brand founded Whole Earth Catalog. This background developed in 1998 when the Sonny Bono Copyright Extension Act, signed by President Clinton, was passed.
One of the most representative organizations related to free culture is Creative Commons, founded by Lawrence Lessig. Other organizations include the QuestCopyRight organization, which emphasizes economic, artistic and social damage from distribution monopoly and signs that free-based distribution is a better way for artists and audiences.
These exercises include free music exercises.

What is free culture and how it can help with social development?
Free culture is a culture that is not protected by copyright and can be used freely by everyone. This culture will be of great help to amateur creators. When I made past videos, it was hard to find free video or music sources. Pro producers can have a backlash against this. However, I think we can achieve better cultural development in quantity than in quality. In other words, cultural equality will be created through free culture.

Interresting Point
From an early age, we are often taught that copyright should be protected. However, I thought excessive copyright could rather prevent social development. Can industries below Disney develop if large companies like Disney monopolize, as the example I heard in this paper? In this regard, I came to realize the significance of the free culture movement.

Discussion
We often watch movies with exclusive seats in movie theaters. As such, cultural monopoly is a common situation. In other words, it is a situation in which large conglomerates can kill small and medium-sized enterprises. On the contrary, if large companies are destroyed to solve this problem, the foundation of the national economy may be shaken. How should we deal with monopoly?
