Week 3 | Which of those are most useful for measuring social development? | Lee Jaeseong

Map of countries by fertility rate (2018), according to CIA World Factbook

Q. Which of those are most useful for measuring social development?

I think the ultimate goal of social development is to improve the quality of life of the members of society. So I think we can know the degree of social development through a total of three factors.

The first is Life Sitifation. It is the easiest indicator of the quality of life for members of society. I think the higher the number, the higher the quality of life for each individual. However, I don't think this is significant as a single indicator because it is an indicator that an individual needs to be "satisfied" without having to develop economically or politically.

The second is Poverty Rate. The figure represents how few economically impoverished citizens are. In other words, the smaller the figure, the more economically affluent the people are, which is related to the quality of life. However, wealth may not be a high quality of life.

The last is the Fertility rate. The less these numbers are, the better I think, the better the country is. Advanced countries don't need to have a lot of childbirth. This means that there are many men and women who have entered society, and it is a society that has more burden than the burden of raising children.

All three indicators have advantages and disadvantages. However, I think these three indicators represent the quality of life well. So, I think we should look at all three indicators and discuss social development.
