W5. Sociocultural evolution (2) / Juhee Cha

With criticism of classical social evolution widely accepted, modern anthropology and sociological approaches have changed, respectively. It provided a background for new theories such as cultural relativism and multi-generation evolution. Modernization theory, which has evolved from classical social evolution theory, emphasizes the modernization factor: Many societies are trying to emulate the most successful society and culture (or need to be). It is also possible to do so, and thus supports the concept of social engineering and states that advanced countries can and should help less developed countries directly or indirectly.Modernization theory has been criticized similarly to that imposed on traditional social evolution theory. It is especially because it is too ethnic and one-sided and focuses on the Western world and its culture.
I thought modern theory paid attention to the relationship between social and cultural phenomena. I thought that 'progressive evolution' was a combination of various sectors of society to achieve more complex and modern cultural evolution. Therefore, I thought it was studying the development of modern society to explore the symbols of one culture and the connections to other cultures. I think studying modern sociology is studying a very wide range of fields. Even science.
Reading this week's class reading material, was there any interesting part of modern sociologists' theories? What is the reason?
