W4. Free-culture movement/ Kim Seonghui

1. Summary
The Free-culture movement encourages the liberty to share and change the works of others. Especially, using as free or public content without payment or permission to the creators of the products. They reject overly restrictive copyright laws and warn about this law can limit creativity. This movement is linked to the soul of free exchange of ideas, as well as other movements such as free and open software movements and open access. Lawrence Lessig, who first created the movement, argues that the Mickey Mouse Protection Act. is a prime example. Copyright is a barrier to cultural production, intelligence sharing, and technological innovation. And it was made for private interests, not public interests. Eventually, in 2001, Lessig started Creative Commons. It was created to share creative works and spread ideas to create something new.

2. New/Interesting
If you are one of the creators, I think it will be difficult to support the free culture movement. If people make a living by making music, books, etc., copyright will be responsible for the biggest economic part of their lives. However, as Lessig said, I also thought that copyright laws were more related to private interests than to public interests. I think I've seen a lot of creative commons logos on blogs and other places, and I first learned that this logo has this purpose and meaning.

3. Discussion
It would not be possible to impose a completely free culture on creators. In what areas do we think we need a free culture, especially? Why is that?

Q. “What is free culture and how it can help with social development?”
A. Through the Free Culture Movement, we can freely use more and more diverse creations. We can make small changes based on these existing creations, or use them to create new innovations. Also, we can share it with others and create something better through feedback. Thus, the free culture movement will help social development.

Comments

  1. I think it is necessary to ease the copyright of tools that can be used using devices such as computers. Or I think the country should come up with a plan that can be used by people who can't afford the tool. Because people who can't even use the tool because of copyright think they lack the opportunity to learn.
