Sociocultural evolution - Modern theories and Contemporary perspectives

In modern theories approach towards sociocultural evolution has changed. We know more about different societies around the world and the development path they went through. New theories are being more careful in making their statements. Previous theories enhanced the importance of Europe, new theories underline how other societies have influenced Europe making it able to achieve certain development. New theories also disregard many classical thoughts and enhance the importance of a free will and its influence on social evolution. An important difference between classical and modern theories is the fact that the modern one puts the focus on empirical evidence rather than one's interpretation of data/events. The factor that is important in the development process is technology. there was also a proposal to use energy consumption as a measure of advancement. Different stages of development are proposed as well. Other theories also put focus that the current development level was achieved by using technology to exploit the resources and by combining it with human resources organization. There are significant differences between classical and modern theories. Most of the XIXth century theories try to explain the development using science and knowledge about past societies. That's also why I consider them more reliable.

Interesting for me is the interaction between cultures and how we can contribute to each other's development. Also, an interesting question that is raised in modern theories is "what if" some civilizations have chosen a different path in their development.

Which country/region will make the biggest progress in the current millenium?
