Millennium development goals/ Changyu Jung
Millennium development goals were 8 goals that
were set for international development. Many countries and international organizations
tried hard to achieve these goals. The eight goals are like these: To eradicate
extreme poverty and hunger, To achieve universal primary education, To promote
gender equality and empower women, To reduce child mortalit, To improve
maternal health, To combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases, To ensure
environmental sustainability and To develop a global partnership for
development. In some countries the goals were achieved, but in other countries,
the goals were not achieved. These goals were criticized for not considering
differences between the countries. It was also criticized for failing to
include the voices of the countries in the goal-setting process.
What was interesting in this article was
that the voices of people living in the developing countries were not involved
in the goal setting process. I thought this was the biggest problem in the
MDGs. Because people didn’t hear the voices of the countries, MDGs didn’t consider
the differences between countries. Each country would have had its own
priorities to achieve, and the situation would have been different. It’s too
bad these goals didn’t reflect the realities of the countries.
What should we consider when setting goals
like these? The differences between countries? The realities of the developing
countries?
