How useful the WB pages are compared to Wikipedia description? / Kim Ami
The WB page talks about the need to "think
of people first" in the development process. In other words, WB reflects
the voices of the poor and vulnerable who are exposed to low-income, vulnerability,
exclusion, non-responsible institutions, helplessness and violence in the
development process. Social development, as WB calls it, is to empower people,
build a cohesive and resilient society, and promote social inclusion of the
poor and vulnerable by having citizens create accessible and responsible
institutions. Meanwhile, social development, as Wikipedia says, is a concept
that also applies to political, social and technological advances, including
economic development. In other words, it is a slightly broader concept than the
WB's social development. So I think social development that WB describes is
less useful than Wikipedia explains.
However, since the WB page allows us to
identify the strategies of the development process for the poor and examples of
WB's projects accordingly, I think WB page is useful if you want to know about
economic development.
Q. If you look at WB's projects, they gave
financial aid to poor countries. So, do you think supporting the poor is the
first step in social development?
