Free culture movement/ Changyu Jung

Free Culture Movement is a movement against excessively repressive copyright and it argues that works should be free and available to all the public. Those who make such claims say copyright hurts creativity and that current policies are old and only represent private interests. And these days, there are some acts that makes copyrights useless, like piracy. These are why some people say culture must be free.

What I found interesting is the concept of free culture itself. Some people think works must be free because copyright hurts creativity and the current policies doesn’t reflect the situations like piracy. I agree that excessively repressive copyright isn’t good. And I also agree that current policies are old. But I still think copyright is important. From the view of artists, copyright is the only one of the few ways to guarantee revenue. I am majoring in culture contents and draw cartoons on an educational magazine. There are so many creators who can’t earn money from their works(and sometimes because of piracy). Based on my experience, I think copyright still plays a big role for artists or creators. So I think if we should move on to free culture, we have to think about how we can guarantee profit for them first.

So, I want to ask you, if we move on to free culture, how can creators make money? And in this current situation like piracy, how can we change the policies?
