In the philosophy of the Joseon Dynasty (the Neo-Confucianism), humans were superior to animals and plants, but should not be used recklessly, and there was also a belief that natural forms such as mountains and water affect human life and the luck of the country. Therefore, it was not possible to use nature recklessly during the Joseon Dynasty. 

Resources such as trees, which were used to build houses, were thoroughly managed, documenting, and controlling them strictly if they were to violate the regulations. 

There were also designated mountains where trees could not be cut. In particular, pine trees, which were widely used by the royal family, were thoroughly managed. Pine trees, which had many uses, could not be cut down if they were less than 100 years old. 

In the case of water, levees were built to preserve the quantity and trees were planted nearby.
