W1. Wikipedia: Reliable sources/ Kim Seonghui

1. Summary

The three sources that could be Wikipedia's source are articles, the book itself or the author who wrote it, and the publishing company that it was published. These three affect the trustworthiness of Wikipedia. This reliability depends on the situation. The more people are investigating facts, parsing legal issues and examining writings, the more reliable this publication is. Information from sources that focus on the main topics to be launched in Wikipedia should be cited. The latest data is especially important in science and the academic field. This is because new information and theories can be created. However, data that has not been verified can't be used right away, as it has not been long since it was revealed like breaking news. Many Wikipedia writings are academic content. Therefore, academic publications and textbooks are used as reliable sources. However, some materials are controversial in related fields or conflict with other theories. Therefore, we should try to use the current academic consensus as a source. Be careful when using documents, especially those written as part of the Ph.D. admission requirements. When using news reports, you should use well-known news media. In addition, Wikipedia's writings should remain neutral. But the source itself does not have to be neutral and objective.

2. New/Interesting

Wikipedia's writings should be neutral. But the source itself does not have to be neutral and objective. This is because it can support information about various perspectives. I felt a little contradictory in that I could use a biased or non-neutral source to write neutral. However, it was easy to understand after I think about a little bit. For example, to write about the topic 'C' in a neutral standing, both opposing and approving views of 'C' must be heard.

3. Discussion

To write Wikipedia, you must use a trusted source. Wikipedia articles using reliable sources may be considered highly reliable. Nevertheless, it is reluctant to use Wikipedia as a source when doing assignments. Why do we feel that way? Do you think Wikipedia can be used as a source of assignments such as reports?

Comments

  1. There are many private knowledge sites similar to Wikipedia, so they seem to be prejudiced. For example, 'Tree Wiki' is a typical example. Some of these wiki sites censor reliability, but others are free to modify information. That is why information is unreliable. I think we have that prejudice because these information is on a site named Wiki.
