W2. Readings (Foreword, Prefaces and Conclusion:"A Globe in Accord")/ Kim Seonghui
1. Summary
Wikipedia has come to represent the best not only on the Internet but also in the ethics of other kinds of economies and communities. To make this possible, there is a "cooperative community" that provides free and voluntary understanding and modification of the world. Wikipedia is a community created through one collaboration. This cooperation is done by the principles that the community accepts and creates, and within a set of norms defined through such arguments. This is a web-based public content of the book. Since much of the usefulness of Wikipedia comes from many sources available online, publishing the book as a Web-based open-content book means more useful.
The first thing about Wikipedia's success is to focus on technology. Technology has performed an essential part in inspiring the vision of a universal encyclopedia. But it is necessary to concentrate on community and culture to comprehend Wikipedia. Reliable social norms combine with Wiki's functions, they can promote Wikipedia cooperation constructively.
2. New/Interesting
The description of the Wikipedia logo was impressive to me. It describes an incomplete world in which each part symbolizes a different language. And also this book is web-based public content of the book. I read some e-books, but it’s quite impressive because contrary to e-books, this book is literally free sources. So some volunteers just volunteering to translate this book in Japanese or other languages.
What makes Wikipedia work is not miraculous especially about wiki software. The success of Wikipedia is because users are strongly cooperative rather than to the technology itself. I learned that not only the technical aspects but also the other aspects are very important.
3. Discussion
The writer said he thought the people who left Wikipedia would start anew on another wiki with memories of using it. I wonder if any other valuable Internet sites have a similar personality to Wikipedia. If not, why doesn't it exist? Why is Wikipedia such a unique example?
There are some sites that are similar to Wikipedia. But they are not as popular as Wikipedia. I think what makes Wikipedia special are openness, connectivity, vastness. Anyone can edit and see information in Wikipedia. And Wikipedia enables people to connect to each other. Also, Wikipedia doesn't handle certain nor narrow information. Anyone can edit any kind of information.
