How do you think mass production, scientific management and bureaucracy made our societies different?/ Kim Seonghui

Q. How do you think mass production, scientific management, and bureaucracy made our societies different?

A. It has changed our society tremendously. Mass production has taken us away from manual, small-volume production in the past. Even small-scale production and mass production are now possible with the design we want. Through this mass production, we have gained material affluence.

Through scientific management, economic efficiency, especially labor productivity, has been greatly enhanced. Scientific management has enabled current mass production. Through this method, tools and instruments used to perform tasks can be common and standardized to reduce efficiency and management costs of task performance.

Most bureaucracy is ranked in the form of pyramids with the chain of command from the top to bottom. The person on the hierarchy has a wide range of decisions and a great sense of responsibility, and controls and manages the people on the hierarchy below. Responsibility is clear in the bureaucracy.

All three have made our society meet our needs very quickly, unlike before, unpredictable and slow-moving. And because everything goes according to scientific management and bureaucracy, it has become somewhat predictable how things will go.

  1. I agree with your opinion! We gained material affluence and we can manage positive lives. Meanwhile, What do you think is behind scientific management, bureaucracy and the resulting increase in efficiency? I want to talk about it :)

    1. Thank you for agreeing! I think there are aspects of scientific management and bureaucracy that make us inhuman. For scientific management, as an example, we think of humans as a tool, measure them, find the best results, and apply them to all cases. I think we should consider both pros and cons:)
