Basics of Social Development/ Changyu Jung
What is social development? The definition
of social development varies person to person. Development means movement to
the upper side with things like great energy and complexity. So, we can say
that “Social Development” means societies’ changes into a better one with
things like that. It can be results of human action or social evolution. There
are some mechanisms in social development. Like governance, technical progress,
cultural progress and education. Cultural progress is similar to moral
progress. It contains things like human rights and gender equality. And
education is also an important factor in social development. It helps people
adjust to their societies. Also, it enhances the quality of lives by teaching
people some practical skills. In addition, it helps people know critical values
in their societies. Progress in governance is also significant. It means more
complex and efficient organization. Like Bureaucracy. People have order of rank
and get promoted according to their performances and skills. Ideals of
governance are like these. Participation, empowerment, transparency, rule of
law and efficiency. Wikipedia shows ideals of governance. People take part in
making dictionary without pressure. And the power is distributed to everyone:
editing. And there are some rules in Wikipedia, and people obey it. The most
important rule in Wikipedia is like this: make a world’s biggest dictionary
based on neutral information.
It’s very interesting that Wikipedia has
the ideals of governance. People get no fortune by joining Wikipedia. They join
Wikipedia and make dictionary to make social profit: a system of knowledge that
is freely shared and accessible to all. I’ve never thought Wikipedia as a community.
I’ve always thought it’s just a big dictionary. But there are uncountable
people who’s trying to make the dictionary better for no fortune even now. Wikipedia
is definitely a community consists of people who want to make society better. And the people are not recruited, they are like volunteers.
Now I wonder how Wikipedia could be an
ideal community. It shows empowerment, rule of law, and participation. And how
can we make our society better based on this Wikipedia model?
